Originating in the 4th c. Eastern feast of all Martyrs, and attested to by St. Ephrem (+ 373), Pope Gregory IV established this commemoration for all the Saints of the Roman Church in 835. Originally celebrated on Easter Friday, it came to be held in Rome on 13 May; later, in the 9th c., it was transferred to 1 Nov. , the date of its celebration in Ireland where it countered the Celtic pagan of the Druids.
Liturgical Notes
1. The celebration of Vespers of the dead, the after that of November 1 is allowed for devotional reasons in the evening. A celebration of the Word of God with the theme of prayer for the dead and the resurrection may be held instead.
2. On the first eight days of November, the faithful may gain a plenary indulgence by visiting a cemetery and praying for the dead. On the days of the year, only a partial indulgence is gained.
3. Today and on the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, or according to the directives of the Ordinary, on the Sunday preceding or following November 2, one plenary indulgence may be gained by visiting a church or oratory and by praying the “Our Father” and the “Creed”, and a prayer for the intention of the Holy Father. This indulgence may be gained form midday of the preceding day to midnight of the day intended.

In virtue of the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Benedict XV of 10 August 1915, all priests are permitted to celebrate three Masses today, provided these take place at different times and on condition, moreover, that while they may at their preference apply one of the Masses in favour of any person and accept for that a Mass a stipend for the second or for the third Mass, the second of which they ate bound to apply respectively for all the faithful departed and the third for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff (1M 204 d).
No other celebrations are permitted.

Rooted in ancient Christian tradition (2nd c. and Tertullian), St. Odilo of Cluny established a memorial of the faithful departed in 988. It was accepted in Rome in the 13th c.

Today marks the anniversary of the dedication of the cathedral church of Rome, on
land owned by the Laterani family, by Pope Sylvester 1, 9 Nov. 324. Honored as
episcopal seat of the pope as bishop of Rome, it is “mother and head of all the
churches of Rome and the world” (“omnium ecclesiarum Urbis et Orbis mater et
caput” ); residence of the popes from the 4th c. until their moving to Avignon
(1309); site of five ecumenical councils; dedicated to the Savoir, later also to John
the Baptist.

Around 300 Constantine built a basilica over the tomb of St. Peter. Reconstruction began in the 14th c. and the present basilica of St. Peter was consecrated 18 Nov. 1626. The construction of St. Paul on Via smaller church built by Constantine. Destroyed by fire in 1823, the new basilica was consecrated 10 Dec. 1854 by Pope Pius IX who joined in one celebration the dedication of these two basicilas.

Andrew was one of 117 people who were martyred in Vietnam between 1820 and 1862. The last of the martyrs were 17 laypersons, one of them a 9-year-old, executed in 1862.
